It is suggested to conceptualize life satisfaction as a second-orderfactor, which is only indirectly related to observable variables. It yields six factor-analytically derived subscales and two broadband groupings, labeled internalizing and externalizing, which were formed by second-orderfactor analyses. The second-orderfactor scores were calculated by summing the scores of the first-order factors and dividing by number of first-order factors. Therefore, the second-orderfactor presumably is a mixture of both, a volatile state and a relatively stable trait. If the latter is large, the correction of attenuation will be large too, and this in turn can increase the loadings on the second-orderfactor. These factors load highly on a second-orderfactor, which is called general life satisfaction. It is demonstrated by means of confirmatory factor analysis that general satisfaction with life can be established in all societies under investigation as an overarching, second-orderfactor. The internal consistency of the four domains proved satisfactory and the domains map onto a latent single factor (labelled quality of life) in second-orderfactor analysis. Second-orderfactor analyses confirmed a single underlying construct for these subscales that accounted for 54% and 57% of the variance at each time, respectively. As a second-orderfactor analysis confirmed that a common latent construct underlies the four scales, a summary score of the 12 items was used to assess quality of life. Second-orderfactor analyses revealed that a single underlying dimension accounted for 71% and 74% of the variance in these subscales during seventh and eighth grade, respectively. The present study employed problem behavior raw scores for the externalizing and internalizing second-order factors. Thus, such second-order factors are not properly interpreted as separate faculties (despite the popularity of such colloquial interpretations of so-called "multiple intelligences").
