For each of these three secular philosophical positions, the project of a history of science revealed a basic paradox. However, many of the interesting problems of generalization in psychological science do not fit this mold. The regulations that stem from the consensus ensure a peer-review scientific process so that the science is as good as any system can guarantee. Anxiety about the relativist abyss in which 'all pasts are equal' has thwarted efforts to evaluate alternatives to 'objective science'. This affinity to the methods of the natural sciences reduces social science to a technical enterprise which has no necessary value implications. Rather than either pictorial or symbolic, it might better serve cognitive science to recast this debate into a problem in both pictorial and symbolic terms. It is this challenge that puts on the table new theoretical issues for social science and public policy. All of this leads to a paradoxical conclusion about national styles in science. But few have directly considered whether such differences involve different ways of doing science: are there epistemic styles for science? We can point to many examples of styles in the sciences and elsewhere that are too widespread to appeal only to local explanations. Consider how we might begin to work out my earlier suggestions about a critical approach to contemporary science. The fact that we can dream up a use for the associated behaviour is not sufficient to put a hypothesis on the table of science. The very fact that the word "philosophia" has been transferred from the seven liberal arts to natural science and metaphysics is significant. Ultimately, the "secularization" of a culture that believes in science as its official religion entails skepticism as to the ideological meaning of science. Even though launches were ultimately rather ephemeral purchases, consumers quickly turned to this new technology as a method of infiltrating the practice of science. Put simply, neuroscience and developmental science have shown that early life is a time of truly remarkable growth in terms of both brain and behavior. Unlike their earlier appeals to science, though, this time around actuaries made a conscious effort to practice what the scientists seemed to be preaching. To be sure, virtually any work of history or social science invokes some species of causal argument.
