Instead, we used data from all same-gender twin pairs available from a nationally representative data set of adolescents. Throughout this period, men were more likely to be depicted as vigorous, employed and involved in same-gender friendships and adventure (whether as hero or villain). Despite these specific hypotheses, there are other reasons why words with same-gender translations may be easier to produce than words with different-gender translations. Similarly, those youths who are harassed by same-gender peers are not necessarily the same youths who are harassed by cross-gender peers. In other words, females and males are formed into or will form same-gender groups. A gender differentiation was also found in that boys perpetrated and experienced more same-gender than crossgender harassment, while the reverse was found for girls. At the camp, children were assigned to groups of eight same-age and same-gender peers; half of the children assigned to each group were maltreated. Conversely, neither pubertal status nor gender composition of the peer network was associated with same-gender harassment. The task is the construction and display of gender identity or affiliation during same-gender interactions in which friendship is also constructed and negotiated. There is also confirmation of the preference for same-gender care, with husbands participating less in the care of female parents. In both experiments, same-gender picture names were produced slightly faster that differentgender picture names. Some differences emerged in the analysis of the four gender pairs but no clear pattern was evident in the same-gender/different-gender combinations. Our sampling frame excluded opposite-gender twin pairs and began with the 73% of register families who had same-gender twins. In contrast, for these adolescents same-gender peer harassment is more likely to be an expression of verbal aggression. These analyses were conducted separately for same-gender and cross-gender harassment because differential patterns of associations were expected. In order to keep the design balanced, we also excluded naming latencies for its matched word in the same-gender set (carota 'car rot'). In addition, males and females tended to chose same-gender children as their friends. Preference for same-gender affiliations emerges around age three, peaks in middle childhood, and lessens during the teen years, yet persists in the workplace and later life. Children were assigned to same-age, same-gender groups of peers and were supervised by adult counselors who were unaware of the children's maltreatment status and of the research hypotheses. Alternatively, if the gender systems of the two languages of a bilingual are relatively autonomous, the selection of the gender feature for same-gender translations and differentgender translations should be similar. The boys' more frequent reporting of same-gender harassment likely reflects a different source and would be consistent with our view of same-gender harassment as a form of verbal aggression. Both were scored using same-gender norms. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
