Species-specific threshold values were calculated as the 25th and 75th percentile ring widths from all ringwidth measurements obtained for each species.
Both species show a positive, linear relationship between ringwidth and annual and/or monthly precipitation.
For each year of the ringwidth series, the average radial growth increment of the decade culminating in that year and of the decade following that year was calculated.
To analyse growth patterns in individual trees, we standardized each treering series by dividing the individual ringwidth values by the mean ringwidth value of the series.
The lower line represents the raw ringwidth measurements; the upper line is the calculated per cent growth change values based on the ringwidth series.
Threshold values for fast and slow growth were calculated as the 25th and 75th percentile ring widths, respectively, from all ringwidth measurements obtained for each species.
Mean ringwidth ranges from 0.72-1.16 mm for individual specimens (n = 5); maximum ringwidth is 1.45 mm and minimum ringwidth is 0.3 mm (n = 32).
These variations are connected with the variations of the ringwidth, which is 19.7 km at the periapsis and 96.4 km at the apoapsis.

Ring widths in trees containing more than one readable core per individual were averaged.
Once visible, tree ring widths were measured to the nearest 0.15 mm under a dissecting scope using a monocular ruler.
Individual proxy records, such as tree ring widths and densities used in dendroclimatology, are calibrated against the instrumental record for the period of overlap.
