Performance of traumatized versus nontraumatized children on this incidental recalltask was moderated by the security of their mental representations of maternal caregivers. First, the serial recalltask was conducted with six-item lists in hopes that any ceiling effects for the numbers of errors would be avoided. All participants completed the recalltask before the 10-minute time limit. In a series of three experiments, syntactic priming was investigated using a sentence recalltask. Importantly, this is not because of general problems in recall, as indicated by the lack of a main effect of group in the recalltask. After the rating task, participants received a surprise recalltask. The experimenter sat to the side of the participant for the serial recalltask. For the serial recalltask, stimuli were stored on a computer. Then, 1 week after each reading, participants completed a cued recalltask to measure their learning of these words. In contrast, the siblings of patients with bipolar disorder exhibited spared performances with the exception of a deficit in the long delay recalltask. Nonetheless, these results showed little disparity between the performance of the normal and poor readers on the recalltask. To counterbalance any practice effects, half of the participants completed the serial recalltask first and the other half the repetition task. The four one-syllable nonwords were recorded separately for the serial recalltask and as one continuous, four-syllable nonword for the repetition task. Second, the lists of words for the serial recalltask consisted of six items instead of eight. A reading passage was administered to each child 1 week before the long-term memory recalltask. The positive effect for the non-analogy version held for the recalltask. Finally, 1 week after each reading, participants completed a cued recalltask to monitor the effect of instruction on word learning. Figure 1 shows mean errors on the serial recalltask for each day for rhyming and nonrhyming lists separately. This was not the case for the immediate recalltask.
