Rarespecies in communities of tropical insect herbivores: pondering the mystery of singletons. Endangered or rarespecies, such as the civet or the serval were identified and released. Rarespecies also utilized decay stages as expected from availability of substrates. The rest of the slide was then scanned for rarespecies and well-preserved specimens for microphotography. Methodological problems in the analysis of tropical insect communities, dominated by rarespecies, are discussed. We quantify community- and population-level phenology and compare phenological cycles of emergent and mid-storey species, and common and rarespecies. Besides demographic stochasticity t he tendency of rarespecies to disperse may affect local rates of extinction in isolated habitats. If we ignore the rarespecies caught less than five times, the rank order of diversity for the different canopy levels changes. Any such bias cannot be quantified, since the host specificity estimates for rarespecies are not available. Locally rarespecies (with only one individual in a plot) occurred mostly in well-drained uplands. Rarespecies in the dry forest could be rare partly because they need large pieces of wood. In contrast, there was no evidence for escape in space as common species were less likely to suffer high pathogen attack than rarespecies. Log-transformed percentage data of 75 pollen taxa were used for the analysis and rarespecies were down-weighted. Of these, 1015 individuals of 30 species were used in the analysis after rarespecies (< 4 individuals) were dropped. If rarespecies (<1 individual ha-1) are excluded, the two sites share 72% of the species. Rarespecies were those with four or fewer individuals in the transects. However, while this reasoning explains the absence of an advantage of rarespecies, it is unclear why rarer species should do worse. Thus, density-dependent processes thought to favour rarespecies may also contribute to the observed higher recruitment efficiency of understorey species. No such trend was present for all species combined or just the rarespecies combined. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
