The between-subjects variable is group (treatment or control), and the within-subjects variable is time (pretest and immediate posttest). These were asked at pretest and in the mailed posttest. To this end, a pretest-posttest experimental design with a control group was adopted. The grand total of the correct pretest responses shows an overall identification rate of 54%, much higher than chance would allow. An arbitrary cutoff score of 80% on the total pretest score was set to exclude subjects from the former category. In the pretest-posttest design, an identification paradigm assessed the effects of 3 weeks of training using multiple natural exemplars on videotape. Results indicated that the greatest improvement from pretest to posttest for all four experimental groups was with vocabulary. Not addressed were issues of particular relevance to women identified as being at high pretest risk, owing to individual or family history of affected births. The long reading times at pretest provided sufficient room for improvement, without reaching a ceiling effect on either list. Moreover, there was no overlap between any child's individual pretest and posttest rhyme production probe scores. The scores are fairly high at baseline, yet there were modest improvements between pretest and posttest. There were no statistically significant changes in any of the survey questions related to attitudes about end-of-life care between pretest and posttest.
