Therefore, it is possible that homonyms would be responded to more accurately than novel words in a task emphasizing lexical representations, such as picturenaming. For instance, picturenaming has visual object recognition as its lead-in process, followed by a core process consisting of all stages of word production. In picturenaming and pairedassociate word generation, a preparation effect was obtained for words that shared phonemic segments regardless of their spelling. The advantage in using picturenaming is that the investigator has a high degree of control over the target word to be produced. Hermans et al. (1998) observed that the phonological facilitation of spoken distractor words in picturenaming may occur across the languages of bilingual speakers. Picturenaming is faster for cognates than for noncognates in bilingual but not in monolingual individuals. It would be interesting to know whether tasks such as word repetition, word translation and picturenaming, for example, require access to this nonlinguistic level. In that study, translation and picturenaming were equally fast for two groups of subjects of different proficiency levels. The current study provides some alternative views of the differences between first and second language picturenaming. From this set of 100, 50 items were chosen for picture identification and 50 items for picturenaming. In picturenaming, for ordinary dictionary-like line drawings, there is little that is language or culture specific. Cutting found that both produced and ignored semantically related prime words interfered with picturenaming. When the task involved articulatory output (word naming, nonword naming, or picturenaming), syllable compatibility between the prime and target significantly influenced performance.
