Therefore, we fully expect seed yield and longevity to be negatively correlated in perennialgrain populations. Indeed, several perennialgrain breeding programs have been initiated and are progressing well. This means that mixtures could have a greater effect on some diseases in perennialgrain systems than in annual systems. Ecology and breeding of perennialgrain crops linkages between genes conferring perenniality and genes that limit yield are difficult or impossible to break. The abundant seed yield of some wild herbaceous perennials lends support to the feasibility of perennialgrain breeding. Meeting the challenge of disease management in perennialgrain cropping systems. Conversely, public plant breeders traditionally focus on the immediate needs of farmers, and allocate few resources to the longerterm project of breeding perennialgrain crops.
