The fast phases produced in response to cervical stimuli were estimated by measuring their peak velocity and amplitude, in accordance with the classical relation between these two parameters (main sequence). Figure 1 shows the derived values for systolic pulmonary arterial pressure calculated from the peak velocity of the regurgitant flow in comparison to systemic systolic blood pressure. A greater early to late peakvelocity ratio is thought to correlate with increasing ventricular compliance in the adult,5'6 but is also influenced by conditions of loading. We measured the anatomical size and peakflowvelocities in the main pulmonary artery and left and right branches, the peakvelocity in the right ventricular outflow tract, and the bifurcation angle. Since the onset of motion was significantly delayed on this test and the time window narrow, the peakvelocity may not have been achieved. The flow velocity integral is defined as the area under the instantaneous peakvelocity curve of one cardiac cycle. This is approximately one-third the peakvelocity observed in aluminum, a value roughly consistent with the difference in material density. This could be a cause of overestimation of pressure gradients from peakvelocity data, a possibility which requires further investigation. The recordings of the highest peakvelocity were selected for deriving the mean and maximal instantaneous gradients and averaged from 3 to 5 waveforms. Movements as a whole were of lower amplitude, with a lower peakvelocity, and had longer movement times in each slicing cycle relative to controls. The systolic peakvelocity is 50-80 cm/s at 20 weeks gestation and 60-90 cm/s at 40 weeks. Our dimensionless values of peakvelocity fluctuations are high compared to mixinglayer experiments. Of these, seven had continuous flow while one had high velocity systolic flow with a peakvelocity of greater than 3 m/sec. A localized velocity peak has implications for interpretation of peakvelocity. Changes in peakvelocity, to assess respiratory pressure variation imposed on the fetal lungs, is a promising but largely unexplored technique. Nonetheless, it appears that the apparent observed peakvelocity, 70 m 0s, was close. For the thermal ions we found values of about 20 and 6 km s-1 for the peakvelocity in the longitudinal and radial directions, respectively.
