Looking at government partisanship, we find a problem similar to that which occurs for consensual majoritarian politics: fragile estimates. When we introduce other factors into our analysis, however, the effects of government partisanship are transformed. They were highly correlated and registered very similar rates of partisanship. Since this variable is measured in the direction of strong partisanship, we would expect this variable to have a negative impact on split-ticket voting. All three objectives could be contained within the left-right, socialist/anti-socialist class issue dimension which was, in any case, becoming the dominant influence on partisanship. These links are formed through social interaction, and so family and friends are as important as the workplace in the development of partisanship. Political distrust tends to be associated with high partisanship, particularly where one's preferred party is out of office for a long time. They interpreted these differences as representing an increasing level of partisanship as voters increased in age. Is it the case that age differences in partisanship are explained by length of time in the electorate, or are they explained by generational differences? As noted above, the results for partisanship, ideology and presidential approval largely account for these totals. As to the role of partisanship in budget deliberation, about one in eight (12 per cent) said that partisanship matters little or not at all. Just as important, the data do not demonstrate a causal relationship between partisanship and frequency of command chances. Thus, a negative and significant association between left-wing partisanship and indirect taxation is expected. Relying on realignment theory, some scholars imply that presidents seek to shape judicial interpretation primarily for reasons of partisanship. For these reasons, statist arguments must be supplemented with arguments concerning political partisanship. On one hand, partisanship is an enduring attribute, among the most central and most stable beliefs people hold about politics. These results remain significant when age, ideology, gender and partisanship are accounted for. However, the discussants of partisans did not simply reflect their own partisanship. To capture the effects of social democracy more clearly, the cabinet partisanship variable was reversed (so that higher values mean more leftist governments).
