For example, partisanidentification plays an important role in both models. Within the political landscape of the 1992 and 1996 elections, we find evidence of value-driven volatility in partisanidentification. Surveys suggest that aggregate partisanidentification fell sharply after 1994 and troughed in 1998, before rising somewhat during the 1999 election campaign. In both samples, we find evidence that support of conflicting core principles translates into volatility in partisanidentification. Cross-national comparisons of partisanidentification are beset by conceptual and methodological difficulties. We find that, while instabilities in partisanidentification reflect low information for some, the competition of core values generates volatility in partisan affiliations for others. What we find is that the endorsement of ideologically competing values does explain heightened response variance in partisanidentification. Weakly identifying people are those who are willing to change party allegiance; they do not have weak party allegiance due to their short-term partisanidentification. When people support core principles endorsed by both the right and the left, this ideological inconsistency disrupts the stability of partisanidentification. These two assumptions generate a model in which older people are stronger partisans as they have a 'declining ease of leaving' the partisanidentification that they have.
