There were more understorey beetles in the acacia plantation, which has more ground cover, compared with the oil palmplantation (see figs 4 and 8b). The trophic structure of the beetle fauna was greatly affected in severely modified environments such as the oil palmplantation. A few species became numerically dominant in the oil palmplantation. The oil palmplantation beetles were, however, distinctly different from the rest of the sites. The oil palmplantation has become the largest sector in terms of area after it surpassed the rubber plantation sector in 1997. Thus, forest plantation is a better environment for maintaining beetle composition than oil palmplantation. A few species in the oil palmplantation became numerically dominant despite low beetle diversity. The two parameters were also significantly higher in the acacia plantation compared with the oil palmplantation. Human activities such as harvesting, pruning, manuring and insecticide spraying were common in the oil palmplantation. Environmental changes affected the trophic structure with proportionally more herbivores (abundance) but fewer predators (species richness and abundance) in the oil palmplantation. The species rankabundance curves (fig. 5) shows that the oil palmplantation has the steepest curve, followed by acacia plantation, then logged forest and finally primary forest. Understorey beetle numbers were lower in the oil palmplantation compared with the acacia plantation. Similarly, a higher percentage of canopy cover of mist-blown trees in the oil palmplantation did not yield more tree-dwelling beetles than those in the acacia plantation. In all cases the oil palmplantation beetles were far apart from the rest suggesting that the beetle composition of the oil palm plantation was very different from other sites. The higher percentage of ground cover in the acacia plantation may have contributed to the higher numbers of understorey beetles when compared with the oil palmplantation. It is not surprising that beetle species richness and abundance were lowest in the oil palmplantation (significant in flight interception trap samples) compared with the acacia plantation.
