The difficulty here is that it seems that the ontologicalargument depends on the notion that maximal possible greatness must be maximal actual greatness. In what follows, the focus will be on a species of ontologicalargument supplemented with pragmatic perspectives. I show that if the ontologicalargument is sound, it proves that a number of maximally great beings must exist. It contains a useful discussion of linear versus hierarchical causes, which is often not treated in standard textbooks, but it is less successful than the chapter on the ontologicalargument. Such a being is a self-explaining being in that there is a successful ontologicalargument for its existence, even if we aren't up to giving it. However, the failure of the ontologicalargument, instead of undermining the cosmological argument, rather liberates it from the dependency it would have if the ontological argument were a success. This brings him closer to discussions typical of the ontologicalargument (in its modal forms at least) than to the cosmological argument and the argument from design. In other words, only if the ontologicalargument holds can the concept of the ens realissimum fulfil its function with respect to the concept of a necessary being. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the extent to which this discussion informs his claim that the cosmological argument depends upon the ontologicalargument. Kant claims that the conceptual adequacy of the ens realissimum in our thinking of a necessary being depends upon the success of the ontologicalargument.
