This required tracking whether each child used the morphemes in each obligatorycontext, over time. These utterances were excluded from the analysis because there was no obligatorycontext for a preposition in the double dative constructions. Thus, the procedure for determining when there is an obligatorycontext for past or present tense is difficult to ascertain. For each grammatical morpheme that was coded, the percentages of correct use in obligatorycontext were computed for each participant and compared across the three groups. The language sample transcripts were coded for use in obligatorycontext of grammatical morphemes marking the feature tense, and grammatical morphemes that mark other, nontense features. Obligatorycontext means the linguistic/non-linguistic context in which the fluent speaker would use the form. In comparing subjects' success rate in correctly supplying a morpheme in an obligatorycontext, they measured accuracy of use, which was assumed to re-ect order of acquisition. All occurrences of inverted structures were compiled as percentages out of obligatory contexts. The production rate of object clitics in obligatory contexts was as low as 40%, compared to over 80% for level-matched monolinguals (mean age: 3;3). Percent of use of accusative marker and of agreement were calculated relative to obligatory contexts of usage. Subjects are only shown on the x-axis when they occurred in at least four obligatory contexts. Table 3 presents both children's overall production of determiners (including target-like, non-target-like and filler determiners), showing number and percent use in obligatory contexts. Determiners were produced in obligatory contexts with 38%, 75 % and 95% accuracy across the three age groups respectively. A frequency count was made of the obligatory contexts for these uses in the data. Percentages of use in obligatory contexts were computed for each grammatical morpheme type. Another measure was the proportion of plurals used in obligatory contexts. If we look at article use in obligatory contexts, we may observe many parallels between the two languages.
