This pattern of results was upheld when we accounted for the effects of age, verbal ability, and nonverbalability. A total of 15 poor comprehenders and 15 normal readers, matched for decoding skill, chronological age, and nonverbalability, participated in this experiment. Particularly striking is the high frequency of this indicator in the small subgroup of children with nonverbalability above 120. The second point to note is the relatively high level of all indicators in children of low nonverbalability. Most of these correlations, however, did not hold up when variance shared with age, verbal ability, and nonverbalability was controlled. Most of these relationships disappeared when the effects of age, verbal ability, and nonverbalability were partialed out. Measures of verbal and nonverbalability were always administered first. Reading comprehension was explained by orthographic processing, nonverbalability, children's attitudes towards reading and word identification. We investigated the nature of syntactic awareness skills in children with reading and language comprehension deficits compared with normally developing children, matched for age, nonverbalability, and decoding skills. The measures were selected to ensure that samples were of average nonverbalability and to enable matching of groups on indices of verbal comprehension and expression. Nonverbalability therefore needs to be taken into account when considering group differences on other measures. Age and nonverbalability were therefore included as covariates in group comparisons, where appropriate. That is, all the children were identified between 24 and 31 months of age; all had normal receptive language as well as average nonverbalability and typical personality development. This dissociation of verbal and nonverbal abilities gave us an opportunity to examine the character of the same-result strategy. Second, these children may differ in relevant nonverbal abilities. First, these late talkers were all children with average or better nonverbal abilities, good receptive language, normal social-personality development, and middle- to upper-middle-class family backgrounds. Groups were matched on chronological age, and had similar receptive vocabulary and nonverbal abilities. These language deficits are observed despite normal nonverbal abilities, normal hearing, no evidence of neurological impairment, and no social or emotional concerns. All the late talkers had normal nonverbal abilities and age-adequate receptive language but significant delays in expressive speech. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
