The results showed that soil resources influenced growth rates of the three distinctive plant species differently, suggesting that soil resources do contribute to nichedifferentiation. Late post-fire succession is predominantly driven by competition and nichedifferentiation (competitiondriven) and less by life-history events of the species in relation to fire (fire-driven). Such high diversity of closely related genera and species within a single area may partly be maintained via nichedifferentiation to patchily distributed vegetation types. In the first case, species are expected to show nichedifferentiation. With them, we review the importance of a regeneration nichedifferentiation on their coexistence. Thus reduced nichedifferentiation might result in the over-exploitation of certain prey types if all the predators now include these items in their diets. Our results highlight nichedifferentiation through the selection of nest sites among different types of shelter. There is evidence, however, to suggest that environmental factors other than light availability could provide opportunities for nichedifferentiation within rain-forest communities. Such nichedifferentiation amongst the juveniles of tree species may play an important role in maintaining the species richness of rain-forest communities. Not all significant interspecific differences are large enough to promote nichedifferentiation between species. Evidence for a high level of nichedifferentiation amongst this group would indicate a significant level of niche differentiation amongst the wider community of tree species. As some trees remain unoccupied by such colonies, our results highlight an aspect of the niche differentiation of each species through the selection of its nest site between different shelters. This variation presumably leads to nichedifferentiation, allowing coexistence of multiple similar species in the same habitat, by partitioning food resources. It is important to keep in mind that nichedifferentiation and inter-specific competition can not always be considered linked. Although these animals were roughly the same size, there is some evidence of nichedifferentiation between the two.
