Primary barriers for adapting physical activity include a lack of time, injury and pain associated with weight-bearing activities, neuropathy and osteoporosis. However, symptoms of sudden or progressive hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and other cranial neuropathies may be overshadowed by those from other metastases. Excessive intake of this vitamin can cause an ataxic sensory neuropathy and patients with neuropathy of other causes may be more susceptible. The association of statins with neuropathy is controversial. A few studies have examined the use of gene therapy to treat other types of peripheral neuropathies. There is evidence t o show that pancreas transplantation will improve autonomic neuropathy, in addition to its beneficial effects on normalising blood glucose. It is associated with serious complications, including cardiovascular disease, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic foot disease, diabetic retinopathy and kidney failure. Symptomatic expression of the neuropathy occurs however in probably a third to half of all cases only, and is more frequent in older patients. Most leg ulcers are secondary to venous insufficiency, arterial disease, neuropathy or a combination of these factors. With an increasing proportion of older people in the population, the frequency of peripheral neuropathy is constantly increasing in the developed world. Unfortunately, there is no currently available treatment for numbness or sensory ataxia - cardinal symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Primarily, these disorders include osteoarthritis and related degenerative-inflammatory diseases and neuropathies. Other causes of ulcers are vasculitis, infection, tumours, neuropathy, and skin diseases. Specific autonomic neuropathy can also occur,54 and a further antibody to ganglionic acetyl choline receptors has been identified in that setting.
