A mushy region is assumed to consist of a fine mixture of two distinct phases separated by free boundaries.
Behind the front there is an annular 'mushy' region containing both oil and water.
Note that the conductive flux from the melt to the mushy layer is always included in the analysis.
A mushy layer is a region of mixed phase comprising a matrix of solid, dendritic crystals with fluid-filled interstices.
The dendritic crystals in the mushy layer became faceted a few hours after the start of each experiment.
In the literature available, as far as we know, the 'mushy region' problem is discussed from the viewpoint of limit equations (see).
They boil the vegetables till they're soft and mushy.
Despite some rather mushy singing at times from the choir, they excel in high register, and the overall effect is one of considerable integrity.
Excessive alkalinity will cause the beans to disintegrate somewhat, becoming soft and mushy.
The solid forms a mushy layer of dendritic crystals, the interstices of which accommodate the residual fluid.
We find that both the depth of the mushy layer and the temperature of the solution are quite accurately predicted by our model.
We now model the solidification before the mushy layer develops and introduce a condition for the onset of its growth.
Near the top of the solid, in the region through which the dendritic mushy layer passed, long, regular, vertically aligned crystals can be seen.
The majority of the growth occurs after the mushy layer has formed, and we develop a general model for this stage of the solidification.
By increasing the surface area a t which solidification can take place, the mushy layer enhances the release of both latent heat and rejected fluid.
Only after approximately five minutes does a discernible mushy layer develop below the solid.
We use this value in the heat flux law a t the interface between the mushy layer and the melt.
The melt below this mushy layer is convectively unstable because it is cooled from above.
The composition only begins to decrease below the depth that the mushy layer had when the melt first became saturated.
I n considering the solidification of an alloy, we have additionally to concern ourselves with the evolution of a mushy layer.
The method adopts a simple trial function for the solid fraction within the mushy layer.
In the model the mushy layer is treated as a continuum phase.
Throughout the mushy layer, the temperature (solid line) is constrained to equal the liquidus temperature (dashed line) of the interstial melt.
In addition, the variations with time of the depths of the roof solid layer, the mushy layer and the basal solid layer were measured.
Consequently, when the roof temperature is maintained at a temperature less than the eutectic, the solid that forms above the mushy layer is compositionally zoned.
As the composition of the melt falls, the bulk composition of the mushy layer that subsequently forms above the melt also falls.
The mushy layer consisted of a large number of intersecting plate-like ice crystals growing away from the brass plate and lying in approximately vertical planes.
A method of multiple scales, with restrictions on the form of the microscopic free boundaries, is used to derive a macroscopic model for the mushy region.
Therefore, mushy regions will not be considered.
The experiment was performed several times to determine the accuracy and repeatability of our measurements of the solution temperature and depth of the mushy layer versus time.
Since rejected fluid is accommodated within the interstices of the mush, the rate of growth of the mushy layer is controlled principally by the rate of heat transfer.
The very fine horizontal structure of the mushy layer allows lateral diffusion to remove any horizontal gradients in the interstitial melt ; therefore we approximate the process as one-dimensional.
I n reality, the release of latent heat is distributed throughout the mushy layer, nearer to the cooled boundary through which it must ultimately be conducted.
Before introducing the governing equations for the solidification process, we define horizontal averages of the physical properties of the solid and mushy layer which are needed for the modelling.
By changing the solid fraction through (3.14) it can alter both the thermal conductivity of the mushy layer via (3.12) and the magnitude and distribution of latent-heat release via (3.13).
Finally, to complctc our extended model we recognize that, owing to the basal crystal growth, the composition of the solution incorporated into the mushy layer decreases with time.
We note that, in writing (4.7), we also assume that the convection in the underlying solution does not mix or entrain the stratified solution in the mushy layer.
The self-similar flows described in this paper are not radially symmetric, even though there is a constant strength front separating the oil filled region ahead from the mushy region behind.
The usual heat equation = 2 (3.1) c t applies both in the pure-phase regions and in each phase within the microstructure of the mushy region.
We believe that a rather different picture is appropriate since crystal growth occurs a t all heights within the mushy layer, not just as the tips (see figure 3).
We then adapt the model for application to the solidification during the initial phase and consider the conditions at the onset of the development of the mushy layer.
The mushy layer and basal solid meet after approximately 35 h, by which stage the composite roof solid occupies approximately two-thirds of the depth of the tank.
They are a difficult notion to accomplish in this vague and mushy area.
