Thus, morphologicalawareness tended to progress in a clear developmental pattern in relation to spelling of morphemes indicating past tense. However, research on morphologicalawareness is relatively rare. Results underscore the potential importance of different facets of morphologicalawareness, as distinct from phonological processing skills, for understanding variability in early vocabulary acquisition. In contrast, word morphology seldom provides new information the second time around, unless students' morphologicalawareness radically changes. There is support for the independence of the relationship between morphologicalawareness and single word reading. In addition, we have demonstrated that vocabulary knowledge is also an important predictor of morphologicalawareness. Both are adaptable across languages and may be distinct features of morphologicalawareness in relation to vocabulary acquisition. In the autoregressor analyses, morphologicalawareness made a greater contribution to reading comprehension than to single word reading. This contribution was comparable to that of phonological awareness and remained 3 years after morphologicalawareness was assessed. However, the explicit association of morphologicalawareness to vocabulary acquisition has only rarely been investigated. This aspect of morphologicalawareness might help young language learners to distinguish among meanings of syllables with identical sounds, facilitating language analysis and vocabulary growth. In contrast, morphologicalawareness rarely contributed significantly to single word reading. We then examined separately each of the two tasks of morphologicalawareness for explaining unique variance in vocabulary knowledge in these equations. The purpose of this paper is to consider theoretical and practical aspects of measurement of morphologicalawareness for explaining children's vocabulary knowledge. While both the phonological and morphologicalawareness measures had good reliability, a further consideration lies in task choice. The finding of a role of morphologicalawareness in pseudoword reading may seem surprising. Our working definition of morphologicalawareness is awareness of and access to the meaning and structure of morphemes in relation to words. The other aspect of morphologicalawareness we measured, morphological structure awareness, requires children to combine morphemes in new ways. Morphologicalawareness and vocabulary knowledge are often discussed in the specific context of literacy learning as well. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
