Based on the theoretical perspectives on unemployment and mentalwell-being, we essentially find three reasons for poor mental well-being during unemployment. Similarly, the study found no general positive effects of involvement in active labour market policy measures on mentalwell-being. In the second model, mentalwell-being at the time of the second interview is entered as a control variable. This result is in no way changed when controlling for mentalwell-being at the time of the first interview. In this case, the beneficial effects on mentalwell-being are clearly also coupled with increased likelihood of re-employment. But what are the negative features of the unemployment situation that seem to cause poor mentalwell-being? The issue of the effect of access to unemployment benefits on mentalwell-being is even more unclear. Is it possible that different types of measures and benefit systems have different effects on mentalwell-being? All the instruments used included an assessment of mentalwell-being, with specific questions relating to depression and anxiety. First, the data should be able to cover subjective aspects of employment and exit from unemployment, aspects such as mentalwell-being and work involvement. Similarly, we can understand differences in effects on mentalwell-being between different measures or benefit systems in so far as they differentially redeem these factors. Why should we expect state intervention in the form of active labour market policy measures or unemployment benefits to affect mentalwell-being? This might lead to differences in mentalwell-being depending on what unemployment benefit system the unemployed individual has access to. We argue that the effect of unemployment on mentalwell-being can be understood in relation to unemployed individuals' sometimes varying needs for employment. In order to answer these questions, we have to begin by looking at what aspects of the unemployment situation cause poor mentalwell-being. That is, to look at individual changes in mentalwell-being over time, and relate these changes to changes in status. Thus, prevention of further deterioration in mentalwell-being might very well keep the unemployed employable when the unemployment spell is prolonged. Why is it, then, that involvement in 'workplace participation' is the only type of active labour market policy measure that clearly improves the participants' mentalwell-being? This assumption receives some support in the few previous studies that have looked at the effects on mentalwell-being of involvement in active labour market policy measures. Their philosophy should encourage people to take responsibility for their personal physical and mentalwell-being. From the Hansard archive Example from the Hansard archive.
