Maths programming started with the study of optimisation problems with linear constraints. The authors make no apologies; the material is designed for those with a good grounding in maths and physics rather than chemistry and biology. Models of models, such as computers that sedulously crank the maths, constitute the same formal models in a different medium. I did not follow the maths, but the biology made interesting sense to me. Several universities are looking at its products for physics and maths courses. I found the problem-based approach very helpful in understanding the concepts and it kept the pur pose of substantial amounts of matrix-based maths clear. In my experience many students thrive on discursive science, but shy away from the maths. I'm not sure that researchers in maths or science would ever ask teachers whether those subjects have value or not! One man in remission reported that aged 12 he cried in his class because he could not do his maths. However, most of the students identify the term 'function' with 'polynomial' or 'formula' in an engineering maths sense. It is infused with the underlying maths, which often includes the derivation of important equations. Throughout the book there is careful reference to selected literature and the three appendices - maths, sources of data and useful numbers - are helpful. The approach is uncompromisingly quantitative throughout, though the maths is very clearly explained and illustrated. As mentioned before, some of them also rely on maths function-table objects to do their processing. A few of them have published their work in robotics journals but most have been content to publish their work in maths journals or at specialised conferences. The topics are often found difficult by students partly because a reasonable standard of maths (all too often lacking in today's students) is required before the material can be grasped. I had to concentrate hard, and even skipping over the maths, the interconnecting sections did not flow as well to me as they might have done. This is true for history, maths and other subjects.
