The downstream portion of the front also propagates upstream, and this accounts for the massflow further downstream. Five types of boundary conditions were used: symmetry, pressure, massflow, inlet, and walls (figure 8). The primary objective is to minimize the massflow through the radial cooling hole passage. This proved to be quite easy for the semicircular wing and the two-dimensional wing because the perturbation massflow normal to the edges is constant. We apply his method to study the effect of a massflow on the resonant absorption of sound waves in the slow-wave dissipative layer. The momentum flow rate of the ejected coolant was not varied independently of the massflow rate. At zero incidence it occurs at a massflow coefficient of about 0.003 with nitrogen and of about 0.001 with helium. The curve for nitrogen at a massflow coefficient of 0.002 is of a markedly different shape from the curves for the other three cases. It is further assumed that there is no net massflow at the surface, and that the number of molecules between the walls is constant. For all other massflow coefficients shown, however, there are marked changes, corresponding to bulged bow shock waves. The input and output massflow rates, pressure, enthalpy, and temperature of the refrigerant are identical. With nitrogen this corresponds to a massflow coefficient of 0.003, and with helium to a massflow coefficient of 0.001. The middle layer further ejects a finite massflow into the vicinity of the equatorial plane. The suction rate through the duct was specified by prescribing the massflow rate at the duct outlet. In this example, the model is used to minimize radial coolant massflow rate whilst maintaining three other outputs within acceptable per formance bounds. This approach can be straightforwardly extended to the study of more general problems, including non-self-adjoint cases, for example including the effect of massflow.
