But, nothing in this implication of the critical realist argument establishes that mainstream economists actually do attempt to do this. It is not clear, however, whether this new rationality plan may appeal to mainstream economists and other social scientists working at opposing ends. Mainstream economists and those related to the market failure literature might feel comfortable with the assumption of markets in the beginning. Once more, mainstream economists can easily identify with this task. The question remains to what extent the capability approach will motivate and move mainstream economists to rethink their paradigmatic identity and profoundly question the nature of their discipline. Included are the work of some of the best mainstream economists in the field today, with a welcome, if slight, admixture of perspectives from political economy and contemporary economic history. That is not simply a criticism of what mainstream economists write and publish but more or less a criticism of how we teach our young and future colleagues. Mainstream economists, politicians and the public at large have barely begun to understand the concepts underlying sustainable development, much less the means by which they can be given substance.
