This zonation apparently reflects gradients that existed in the original magmachamber prior to eruption, with mechanical sorting of crystals during eruption being of minor importance. In this work the term 'caldera' is used exclusively for a topographic depression caused by predominantly vertical subsidence into a subvolcanic magmachamber in response to magma withdrawal.
