We also struggled to determine our appropriate role in assisting these low-incomepeople during crises. Potential interviewers were recommended by community partners, the community advisory committee, and agencies serving low-incomepeople throughout the city. Moreover, incorporating low-incomepeople as interviewers enhanced data validity, built individual and community research capacity, and was empowering. It is easier to stress how to prepare low-income students for formal education than to critique the systems that turn them into low-incomepeople in the first place. We fostered participation of low-incomepeople by including their perspectives during the design and implementation of the study, reducing barriers for participation, and using peer interviewers. Definitely, those with higher incomes could more easily afford a price premium since they pay a much lower percentage of their incomes for food than do low-incomepeople. Secondly, we selected project co-ordinators and research assistants who had strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of the community, and sensitivity to issues faced by low-incomepeople and agencies serving them. These dissemination activities to various audiences increased knowledge of the challenges low-incomepeople face in accessing health-related services and supports, thereby increasing the potential for action.
