These results have implications for general principles of literacy and literacyinstruction. However, in this paper our focus is on the language of their initial literacyinstruction. What is interesting to explore, however, is how bilinguals who have received less than a year of formal literacyinstruction produce and analyze such diphthongs. The preschool-aged children were selected in a kindergarten to minimize their exposure to formal literacyinstruction. The children were only beginning to become bilingual and group differences usually disappeared by first grade, when literacyinstruction was introduced. The second study replicated these results and demonstrated a significant role for the language of literacyinstruction. Thus, the effects of rime-based literacyinstruction may not be limited to so-called large unit variables. Our data suggests that the view through this window is dramatically affected by the kinds of literacyinstruction that the child is receiving. Three classroom teachers were interviewed, and parents were contacted to confirm their minimal formal literacyinstruction to children. One factor is the language in which literacyinstruction occurs. The studies reported here indicate the need for more individualized literacyinstruction depending on linguistic background. The first would advocate discussing morphemic conventions from the first days of literacy instruction, while the second would propose waiting several years before doing so. This study focuses on ways of organising literacyinstruction to raise the skill levels of low-achieving, language minority students. It seems likely that these responses reflected the influence of literacyinstruction as their incidence was very low before the second year of schooling. The importance of literacyinstruction in promoting the development of phoneme awareness was the other major finding. It is also important to take into account the nature of the literacyinstruction being implemented in participating schools. This mismatch in the language of literacyinstruction and the language of testing may also account for some of the differences between the groups. Our results further suggest that, when formal literacyinstruction begins, more boys lack the knowledge of letter names that can aid reading and spelling performance. Therefore, morphological knowledge is in theory not required in spelling and is not stressed in literacyinstruction. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
