Because of its relationship to the debate construed as the central debate for linguistic anthropology, their work is also construed as crucially theoretical. We surveyed 16 textbooks in sociolinguistics and linguisticanthropology that were published, or published in new editions, in the 1990s. In its attention to these issues, this volume makes a valuable contribution to linguisticanthropology, education, and linguistics. As far as the use of the notion "heteroglossia" is concerned, my source is its current use in linguisticanthropology. There is evidence for a similar pattern in sociolinguistics and linguisticanthropology. The basic issue appears to be what these authors regard as fundamental questions; to fall within linguisticanthropology, the questions have to be anthropological. And why do we not see chapters dedicated to other major themes in linguisticanthropology, such as gender, globalization, colonialism, ethnolinguistic nationalism, and language death? This is work on language socialization, which is treated as one of the "topics in" linguisticanthropology. Within linguisticanthropology, the focus of research has been on the relations between political events and particular speech genres rather than on persuasion. He must be aware of his own power in leading the dance that he defines through his reading of the history of linguisticanthropology. Linguisticanthropology should be of great help in opening up this dynamic branch of research to a broader audience. This first book in a new series is an extended essay on the basic tenets of linguisticanthropology. And all readers will emerge informed about the tools linguisticanthropology offers to understand how selves and social worlds are negotiated through language. The first two sections focus on an intellectual assessment of ideas central to linguisticanthropology: language and context. On the one hand, linguisticanthropology offers those missing ingredients; on the other hand, cognitive linguistics offers a theoretical frame. Linguisticanthropology approaches language as a culturally embedded phenomenon, examining the linkages between linguistic practices, shared perceptions of languages and their speakers, and broader sociopolitical contexts. However, this book should be supplemented heavily by readings from other contemporary scholars who provide needed alternative perspectives on the history and scope of linguisticanthropology.
