For instance, picture naming has visual object recognition as its lead-in process, followed by a core process consisting of all stages of word production. We conducted paired-sample t-tests comparing the mean percentages at each age of lead-in labels that were successful either with or without gestures. The spheres together with the screens should damp out any swirling motions created by the lead-in pumping. This method requires finding a context that is uniquely associated with the targeted structure, and then using a lead-in statement to elicit the child's production. Lead-in labels were further coded as ' lead-in-successful ' or 'lead-in-unsuccessful ', based on children's subsequent attention or inattention to the labeled object. We conclude, as predicted, that the relation between lead-in labels and children's vocabulary development is not necessarily a negative one, as had been previously theorized. Thus, gesture seems to have a moderating effect on the success of lead-in labels. Finally, use of gesture is associated with the redirective success of lead-in labels. This could be misunderstood, since it is not the first place most people should look if they want an easy lead-in. Results indicate that parents' use of successful lead-in labels is positively correlated with children's vocabulary, whereas use of unsuccessful labels is negatively correlated. However, this overall measure of ' lead-in ' labeling includes labels that result in the infant attending to the correct referent, along with those that do not. First, we examine the extent to which parents offer gestural cues with their lead-in labels. The book this is an excellent lead-in to any glacial research topic in which one might be interested. If such a relation between gesture, lead-in success and child vocabulary is systematic, it would suggest that lead-in labeling is not necessarily detrimental. This exception was the frequency measure of lead-in unsuccessful labels at 1;10. There each word production task used in the literature was analyzed as the combination of a "core" process and a "lead-in" process. Their data show a single positive correlation between lead-in labels supported by gesture and vocabulary size. The two groups that received a subject and a verb as a lead-in were combined for the analysis of variance. There was no difference in overall likeliness ratings as a function of type of lead-in and no interaction. The current study examines whether the relation between lead-in labels and child vocabulary is influenced by whether the child's attention is redirected. We noted that these earlier studies did not make the distinction between lead-in labels that successfully redirected children's attention and those that did not. Elimination of these vibrations was accomplished by suspending the quieting chamber and its lead-in hose from soft springs connected to the ceiling.
