The fourth considers how the landowning elite reacted when faced with the economic depression of the 1930s, and is followed by a summary conclusion. It took the properties of only a handful of landowning families to match this figure. The last chapter offers a view of landowning families and landowning patterns in two villages. Interestingly, when after the reversion of the manor and lands in 1722 to the previous landowning family the new landlord publicly announced that he was restoring doles.! In some cases, the very size of the landowning elite's fortunes made this a much slower process than the social reformers of the time would have liked. Within this framework, the hereditary landowning class would only be effective where it had not reneged upon its traditional duties to the land and those who lived upon it. A comparison of the landowning fortunes we have already mentioned with the new ones that emerged or reached their apogee in these years suggests this clearly. The farming and landowning organisations have also been studying this difficult problem, and we are taking into account their ideas for possible solutions.
