Invertedcommas around taxonomic names imply that taxonomic attribution at this level is questionable.
When a word or phrase is placed in invertedcommas, it allows us a provisional use of it.
It is iterative and has the appearance of slang, and is commonly put in invertedcommas.
Invertedcommas make a word inclusive beyond its initial meaning.
These rules are sometimes arbitrary and irrelevant to the sense; for example, that commas and periods come inside invertedcommas, and colons and semi-colons outside.
I use invertedcommas to signal that this seemingly innocent term has to cover so much that containing it is as difficult as defining it.
The invertedcommas around belongs suggest perhaps that standard notions of constituency do not apply here.
Now, when we put a word in invertedcommas are we in effect placing it within a proscenium, theatricalizing it?
Linguistically speaking, placing a word in invertedcommas has the opposite effect; it becomes more inclusive.
The placing of the closing invertedcommas after the sentence-final stop is a common publishers' convention, if an illogical one.
Interestingly, in the latter case, the word is often placed within 'invertedcommas'.
This is nowhere so well illustrated as in the thousands of invertedcommas which litter academic papers (my own included).
The very words have scarcely yet entered the historian's vocabulary, except perhaps to the accompaniment of deprecatory invertedcommas.
One set of values is not merely exchanged for another, however, but placed in the background, so that its substitution appears, so to speak, in invertedcommas.
Because it's conscious, it can sometimes be a little more clumsy perhaps, or it can evoke pastiche, or you feel the invertedcommas going up: 'here's the folk bit'.
One cannot possibly appeal to men under these conditions to act, as it is said in invertedcommas, "responsibly" towards their industry.
