The average scores of the three indicators were used to estimate perceived institutionaleffectiveness. On the other hand, agricultural labor was significantly and negatively correlated with institutionaleffectiveness. A multi-dimensional scale was constructed to measure institutionaleffectiveness in the study areas. Demand for improved institutionaleffectiveness has thus grown in comparison to budgetary allocations. Seven-item statements for each indicator were used to estimate institutionaleffectiveness. The negative influence of these variables on institutionaleffectiveness was contradictory to expectations. All economic variables, except the off-farm income, showed positive and significant correlation with household participation and institutionaleffectiveness. Regression analysis was done to examine the socioeconomic variables that significantly influenced the variation in household participation and institutionaleffectiveness. The factor analysis grouped several socioeconomic variables into three major factors to explain household participation and institutionaleffectiveness. These factors explain the household participation and institutionaleffectiveness of the mountain watershed management and farming system development process. Likewise, gross farm income, farm size, and livestock holding were also linearly related to household participation and institutionaleffectiveness. Therefore, it would not be erroneous to assert that education is a primary factor for household participation and institutionaleffectiveness. Among the economic variables, farm size and gross farm income were directly and significantly related with household participation and institutionaleffectiveness. Institutionaleffectiveness was measured through the households' responses concerning their perception on the effectiveness of the institutions involved in the development activities. The extracted factors cumulatively explained 70.5 per cent of the total variance associated with factors for household participation and institutionaleffectiveness. The selection of these variables is based on an earlier analysis that exhibited significant correlations between socioeconomic variables, household participation, and institutionaleffectiveness. An examination of the significant variables showed that gross farm income appeared in all models, but with a negative influence on institutionaleffectiveness. The economic variables such as farm size, livestock holding, and off-farm and gross farm incomes were significantly correlated with institutionaleffectiveness, especially with the strong influence of gross farm income.
