Certainly, there are some aspects of infantmortality that relate to medical care. During the first decade and a half of the century infantmortality was horrifyingly high. For infantmortality, on the other hand, there is an endogenous component involving many causes of death which were less easily eradicated. Yet in the case of infantmortality the urban penalty paradox is even more evident. In general, in all the specifications where the coefficient on predicted infantmortality is found to be significant, it has a negative sign. More than 70% of the population is rural and the infantmortality rate is about 206 per 1000. The changing pattern of demographic and socioeconomic determinants of infantmortality can be divided into four sections. One possibility is to use infantmortality rates as a measure of current health status among childbearing women. As with infantmortality, the greatest differences are associated with the length of the preceding birth interval. Birth order does not have a significant gross effect on infantmortality, but the net effects are significant because of the control on maternal age. This, however, is not the case and infantmortality has been generally slightly higher than average in these areas. This suggests that the survival status of the preceding child influenced infantmortality independently of parental education and household economic status. There has been a substantial reduction in infantmortality since the late 1940s. In the developing countries infantmortality still remains a sensitive indicator of socioeconomic standards.
