The elaboration of a legislative and administrative framework governing work, trade unions and the conduct of industrial disputes pulled these agents into the structure of industrialrelations. The major focus is on changes in education and broadcasting, with attention also given to interpreting and translating, industrialrelations, and the role of languages in diplomacy and trade. The leaders of the organizations that were the central agents in the industrialrelations field had developed their relationships in ways that did not sustain working class participation. At some point between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s, workers' compensation became more closely linked in policy debates to workplace safety and in academic research to industrialrelations. It is tempting to suggest an analogy with the market place : parties can be regarded as the electoral equivalent of what trade unions are in industrialrelations. Second, greater fragmentation is occurring in work organisation, although most industrialrelations systems are grappling with the themes of team-working, total quality management and new human resource management practices. The spirit of justice and charity figure nowhere to greater advantage, perhaps, than in our industrialrelations. Corporatist institutions of industrialrelations will likely continue to suppress wage inflation in countries that have them, but corporatism seems to be breaking down in several industrialized democracies. This was a company with excellent industrialrelations, excellent skills, a full order book and a great future.
