Returning to middle formation, my analysis also has the advantage of handling cases with a non-generic implicitargument. To recapitulate, even these instances of middles that have attracted little attention so far involve an implicitargument. The proposed analysis of middle by means of conceptual structure accommodates even the implicitargument of middles that express specific events. If - the implicitargument goes - vision and mental imagery overlap, then imagery, like vision, must be depictive. This implicitargument can be seen to work like a bound variable. Compatibility with all by itself alone does not always inform us correctly about the presence or absence of an implicitargument. Rather, the presence of an implicitargument is a defining characteristic, as is widely accepted. This paper aims to show that the presence of an implicitargument is in fact a defining characteristic of middles. In contrast, the presence of an implicitargument is a defining characteristic of middles, in accord with the usual understanding in the literature. Besides the uncontroversial middles often cited in the literature, even middles lacking genericity or modality involve an implicitargument. These examples indicate the necessity to associate the implicitargument with a specific value. The implicitargument of middles is syntactically unexpressed but semantically present, and it can figure in the interpretation of middles which express specific events. The alternative (somehow reducing apparent altruism to selfinterest) always entails at least an implicitargument about human cognitive limitations. Finally, middles are said to involve an implicitargument, in sharp contrast with ergatives, which do not. The discussion so far has confirmed the widely held assumption that middles necessarily involve an implicitargument. This means that a syntactically invisible implicitargument is necessarily an internal argument. Two remarks are in order here about the compatibility between an implicitargument and all by itself. It is relatively easy to convert concrete functions to function templates, and since they support implicitargument deduction, calling function templates does not syntactically differ from calling non-generic functions.
