Once the segments are identified, they can be described by key terms or headline-type descriptors. Many newspapers and periodicals regularly incorporate phrasal verbs into their headlines. Very often, a headline is based on the lead (first paragraph) of the article. Like a newspaper, each story has a headline with a location and date leading the story. The writer claims to have ' 'entered the narrative' ' by virtue of a pair of mated headlines, top of the page, same typeface, same type size. Tabloid journalists, however, are another matter, especially when dealing with headlines. It shows that headlines contain predictable sequences, not always apparent to those reading them, which can be regarded as incipient 'rules'. At the same time, the universalizing, faintly therapy-speak headline claim that 'every culture is a wound culture' sits oddly with the book's scrupulously historicist methodology. In recent years the deficiencies of the justice system have provided frequent headlines in a mass media more open and denunciatory than in the past. In addition, some of these headlines emphasize the "out-of-ordinariness" of the news story. There is also, however, amongst the plethora of images and interviews, evidence of linguistic compression, especially in headlines. Words like these frequently appear in headlines, in contents lists, and sometimes in the text of articles. Few headline-writers can resist word-play, especially if it refers to something topical. One reason for such disagreements may be because different types of headline have sometimes been lumped together. In fact, as the text below the headline reveals, this shows a divergence of trends. Religious groups and movements perform political acts and make political statements that make headline news virtually every day.
