If haemorrhage originates below the uterine cervix, a haematoma is usually present in the internal iliac cavity and in the preperitoneal space. It is likely that the leak had occurred shortly after completion of the first operation, leading to the formation of the observed supraclavicular haematoma. This was interpreted as signal from fresher, softer haematoma, since the previous study, c) and d) show the corresponding transaxial images. These patients are at risk of developing a spinal/epidural haematoma and potential neurological complications. The haematoma may be of moderate size and contained within it to enable conservative management. However, they are associated with slightly higher risk of surgical site bleeding and wound haematomas. Large symptomatic haematomas are usually evacuated, but smaller haematomas may be left and the patients monitored clinically. This was thought to be a residual intraoperative haematoma. Reported complications include infection, pain, ischaemia, fever, haematoma, vascular perforation, uterine necrosis and sepsis. Subdural haematoma is a rare but remediable cause, especially as very elderly patients are prone to this condition because of cerebral atrophy. There may also be a worry about what the coroner might say if a pathologist reported an untreated haematoma. In addition, women with vertical extensions were more likely to have surgical complications, including broad ligament haematoma, cervical and uterine artery lacerations and delayed delivery. The size of the haematoma decreased over the next week and recovery was uneventful. Post-mortem showed extensive mediastinal widening due to a massive haematoma. This difference, as shown, can give useful diagnostic information when haematoma of different ages lie beside one another. Daily irrigation of an indwelling catheter with saline may be helpful in promoting drainage of viscous collections or infected haematomas, and may prevent catheter occlusion. Many focal or circumscribed fluid collections incidentally detected on cross-sectional imaging, especially in the early post-operative period, are not abscesses or infected haematomas, and do not require treatment. This procedure was difficult because of the small size of the femoral artery, and had to be abandoned due to haemorrhage and formation of femoral haematoma. Following the operation, a non-pulsatile swelling was noted in the left supraclavicular region, shown by ultrasound scan (performed in the intensive care unit) to be a haematoma. The haematoma went untreated, became badly infected and ate into her bone, causing irreversible skeletal damage and permanent severe pain. From the Hansard archive Example from the Hansard archive.
