This study concentrates on the latter which contain abundant chlorite-rich layers, commonly rich in magnetite and haematite grains. The red colour of the dolomite is due to abundant haematite crystallites that grew in the dolomite crystal fabric. Thus, dolomite vein formation and haematite precipitation were two distinct events, which likely record different conditions. Rather, haematite precipitation postdated the dolomite and took advantage of the dolomite crystal fabric. The nodules are dispersed throughout a clay and haematite-rich matrix. In addition, haematite is commonly present, to locally abundant. The calcination of haematite from a lower to a higher temperature could be used to monitor the water content in the lattice. These observations indicate that the dolomite and haematite were not precipitated as two coeval minerals. The pink colour is the product of haematite staining of the crinoid ossicles prior to growth of the syntaxial cement. The magnetization in the veins, schist and sandstones is interpreted to have been acquired when the haematite was precipitated. This is supported by petrographic studies of these samples that revealed skeletal magnetite with borders altered to haematite. Where the schist is reddened around the dolomite veins, the reddened portions similarly contain an intermixture of dolomite and haematite. These haematite-rich 'berries ' weather out of the rock and are strewn across the surface. This is supported by the presence of authigenic haematite. Depending on the particle size, haematite has been categorized as red (grain diameter less than 10 mm) and grey (grain diameter over 10 mm). This age represents the time of haematite precipitation from iron-rich dolomite that may have been related to deep oxidizing weathering. There is clearly enough iron in the dolomite to account for the haematite precipitation. There is no relationship between haematite distribution and growth zones in the dolomite (no zones are coated by haematite, and haematite occurs in more than one zone). It is found that haematite with water in its lattice has a higher adsorption affinity towards ribose nucleotides compared with the haematite with no water in its lattice. The haematite is limited to the dolomite. It is known that several ancient populations were exposed to some of the substances that are now classed as carcinogens, such as haematite, aflatoxins and arsenic compounds.
