Unless they had cultivated exceptional mutual trust with a client, freelancers were vulnerable to rapid, unforeseen and inexplicable changes in commissions. Contact by telephone, e-mail and letter was maintained with the other freelancers, which provided many valuable insights into their changing circumstances. It is generally in a freelancer's best interest to avoid controversy. It is possible that those wishing to become part of a flexible labour pool did so as freelancers or consultants, after accepting early retirement. Long-serving freelancers are ' survivors ' and unusual by dint of their extensive experience. Excluded from the study group were senior managers or executives who were not engaged in the day-to-day management of freelancers. Successful freelancers had to be prepared at times to work very long hours to maintain a productive portfolio. One freelancer had found that his experience as a producerdirector was a disadvantage when searching for work. Unless the freelancer engaged in constant replenishment and reciprocity, they tended to find themselves increasingly cut off from employment opportunities. It was rare for the employer to pay for training or new equipment, unless the freelancer was office-based or employed on a longterm contract.
