Table 1 shows the postoperative diagnoses and procedures performed in the 110 patients who underwent arthroscopy. A source of variation among studies estimating the proportion of potentially avoidable arthroscopies is the criteria used to consider that the procedure would be averted. An economic evaluation was performed based on cost-effectiveness ratios (per averted arthroscopy), including direct and indirect costs. Unfortunately, there is no scientific evidence to substantiate the efficacy of arthroscopy for "gray areas" such as the ones considered here. However, diagnostic arthroscopy sometimes reveals no abnormality or only minor lesions. One hundred sixteen patients (48%) were scheduled for arthroscopy. Quality of life and complications from arthroscopy were not included in our analysis. We used data from a cohort of patients undergoing arthroscopy of the knee. Influence of magnetic resonance imaging on a knee arthroscopy waiting list. The decision analysis hinged on the estimate of the probability of potentially avoidable arthroscopies. The cost-effectiveness ratio was calculated by comparing the incremental cost in dollars to the incremental effectiveness, measured as the number of arthroscopies prevented. For most studies, however, the threshold was approximately 20% to 30% of averted arthroscopies. From a patient's perspective, diagnostic or therapeutic arthroscopies are virtually identical: both are typically day-case procedures involving similar recovery periods. Two patients had bilateral knee arthroscopies; the results reported here only refer to the worse knee. See all examples of arthroscopy These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
