In our study, in only seven of the 54 outbreaks (13 %) with a known infection route for noroviruses could a foodbornetransmission have occurred. It might even be more important than foodbornetransmission. Therefore, microbiological investigation in tandem with the collection and analysis of epidemiological data can provide firm evidence of foodbornetransmission. As expected, foodbornetransmission dominated (88 %) in restaurant-associated outbreaks. Experimental studies suggest that the conditions necessary for foodbornetransmission to occur can be found in domestic kitchens. The occurrence of this outbreak emphasizes the importance of preventing foodbornetransmission of norovirus. On seven occasions (13 %), a foodbornetransmission was a possible cause. However, foodbornetransmission remains important. Direct person-to-person contact was the most likely route of transmission for the majority of outbreaks (78 %), followed by foodbornetransmission (13 %) and a combination of foodborne and personto-person transmission (8 %). In 1774 (34 %) of these 5257 outbreaks food was thought to be the primary route of transmission (for 256 of these outbreaks foodbornetransmission was followed by person-to-person transmission).
