A possibility to be considered is whether the acquisition of endocytic competence could be transferred to the oocyte from the overlying folliclecell epithelium via gap junction contacts. On the basis of these data the first aim of this research was to investigate whether one of the beneficial effects of gonadotropins was to prevent folliclecell apoptosis. Once primordial follicles enter this phase the first morphological modifications are an increase in oocyte volume accompanied by hypertrophy and hyperplasia of follicle cells. At this time the oocyte surface exhibits deep crypts where the macrovilli enter, thus increasing the folliclecell-oocyte junctions. The folliclecell (fc) has abundant ribosomes, rough endoplasmic reticulum and vesicles with fibrillar material (asterisk). Recent studies have provided evidence that the oocyte also can produce paracrine factors able to regulate several folliclecell activities. It seems likely that other junctions such as desmosomes would be involved in folliclecell-oocyte interactions. In the presence of ouabain, no precipitates were found throughout the oolemma and throughout the folliclecell membranes, while some reaction product was observed extracellularly between the cells. Folliclecell-oocyte interactions of the oocyte, which becomes competent to incorporate the above particles, would indicate a coordination in the process of formation of the cortical vesicles. In superficial follicular sections, follicle cells show a polygonal shape, with a large round nucleus and electron-lucent cytoplasm (clear cells). Because of the development of macrovilli and vesicles, the follicle cells appear arched over the oocyte. The possible role of the follicle cells in these aspects in the caecilians is under investigation. Uncoupling of oocyte follicle cells triggers reinitiation of meiosis in amphibian oocytes. The two groups used as controls showed dye transfer between the oocyte and the follicle cells. In general, the membranes of nurse cells and follicle cells were less densely decorated with precipitates than the oolemma. The follicle cells have an ovoid nucleus containing a large prominent nucleolus with a conspicuous granular component. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
