From simulation to folkpsychology : the case for development. Within folkpsychology, one cannot infer preferences from choices alone, because choices depend on both belief and preference. Although it is defined in terms of choice, preference* may nevertheless correspond to a notion that is implicit in folkpsychology. We believe that this highly specified definition serves both folkpsychology and cognitive neuroscience equally well. Given that the belief-holders are ordinary people, they cannot plausibly be assumed to employ anything other than the conceptual apparatus of folkpsychology and ontology. But what folkpsychology leaves out is irrationality of the first type. It conjures up hated notions of subjectivity, teleology, and wishy-washy folkpsychology. The revelation theorem really is a theorem, and choices do not reveal preferences (as preferences are understood in folkpsychology). This is all the more important because folkpsychology does what it can to blur this distinction. There is plenty of evidence that people with autism spectrum conditions have degrees of difficulty in mind reading, or folkpsychology. But a philosophical account should surely do more than simply reflect conflations embedded in folkpsychology. In addition, folkpsychology generally regards empathy as a phenomenon reserved for humans. Since preference orderings can be represented by utility functions, folkpsychology turns into a mathematical theory of utility maximization. And this is an enterprise, so the explanation would go, that transcends entirely the regime described in folkpsychology and rational choice theory. And how do children learn this "folkpsychology" way of talking and functioning in the world? The formal disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences, for instance, are an abstraction of folkpsychology. In this view, belief talk and, by extension, folkpsychology talk in general cannot be learned as a naming game or as a mere internalization of social practices.
