Normative beliefs are sufficiently flexible to adapt to new social realities such as gender equality and increased femaleparticipation in paid-work. Increased social inequality has thus been counterbalanced by employment growth (especially femaleparticipation) and advances in the quality of life at work. Another critical change to the terms of the debate was the increase in femaleparticipation in the labour force. This was the only segment of the event that contained active femaleparticipation. That the event occurred in the afternoon and was specifically designated as a youth event alleviated the tension somewhat, and limited femaleparticipation did occur. Particularly given the increasing femaleparticipation, respondents felt that there was a need to address career structures for the growing proportion of non-principals and part-time principals. It is easy to forget that, at the time of writing, the extent of femaleparticipation in the profession was not simply low but somehow worthy of attention.
