It becomes critical, therefore, to enquire into the causes of individual differences in the level of falseself-behavior that is displayed. No group differences emerged for adaptive maternal representation and falseself-representation change scores. The distinction between true and falseself behavior is, however, well understood by seventh graders, and becomes increasingly salient among those in midadolescence and beyond. In two recent studies of multiple self-representations across roles, we have asked adolescents to indicate whether each attribute they generate represents true or falseself-behavior.
