The participants received explicitfeedback on every response, explaining in detail for each error why the response was wrong. This is the difference between implicit and explicitfeedback. It is concluded that less explicitfeedback seemed to help these students to self-edit just as well as corrections coded by error type. The user interactions (including explicitfeedback) are used to refine the user model in order to be able to deliver more precise results next time. Supervised learning requires explicitfeedback provided by input-output pairs and gives a map from inputs to outputs. The second alternative is to develop questions that apply to any system using explicitfeedback. The data taken as input consists of the documents together with a label that is derived from explicitfeedback. These could form a separate section of the questionnaire that is only completed if explicitfeedback is used. Except for the agents that ask for explicitfeedback, agents have to infer example labels from observation of user behavior. The price to pay for using explicitfeedback is that user and system have to spend more dialogue turns to solve the task. Also, there is no explicitfeedback to the formation. Statistical comparisons of the learners' performance on the posttests showed a clear advantage for explicitfeedback over implicit feedback for both the delayed imitation and grammaticality judgment posttests. Whenever a research paper that has been classified as belonging to a topic is browsed or receives explicitfeedback, this topic accumulates an interest value for the user. In consequence, an adaptive system should be able to interpret the natural user behaviour on all levels as user feedback, without the need for any further explicitfeedback. A user gives explicitfeedback by using one or more ordinal or qualitative scales, whereas implicit feedback is estimated by agents according to observation of a group of interest indicators. Implicit feedback can be combined with explicitfeedback in order to decrease the user effort, while maintaining a certain accuracy in inferring user preferences. Explicitfeedback does not come for free, however. A central issue of explicitfeedback is that the user has to examine items to assign them a value on a rating scale or write comments about items. Even though more reliable and easy to implement, explicitfeedback burdens the user with an additional cognitive load caused by the necessity of evaluating each information item.
